Whatever type of development you are working on, as part of the planning process it is likely that you will need to consider noise. It is increasingly common that there will be planning requirements or noise regulations which you need to comply with, and you may be asked to investigate traffic noise, rail noise, industrial noise or plant noise and how it could affect your proposals. You may also be required to provide noise assessments to show how noise from your development could affect your potential neighbours.

How We Can Help

Typical aspects of your project that we can help with are:

• If you are considering developing a site adjacent to a busy road, railway or industrial site you will need to look at the noise implications on the site layout or building constructions.
• If your council have requested you assess a site in accordance with Planning Policy Guidance 24 Planning and Noise (PPG24) then you will need a PPG24 noise assessment to determine the Noise Exposure Category (often abbreviated to NEC) of the site.
• If your client or the council have set internal noise limits (with or without relating them to British Standards such as BS8233:1999 or World Health Organisation (WHO) guidance on noise) then you will need a noise survey and an acoustic assessment of the sound insulation requirements of the structures.
• If you are planning a new retail, industrial, leisure or warehousing development a noise assessment can be required to determine noise related planning conditions (eg for reversing alarms of delivery vehicles or for plant noise) and could be helpful in reducing operating restrictions.
• If you have a planning condition asking you to assess a proposed development for industrial noise or plant noise in accordance with BS4142 to meet planning requirements and minimise the possibility of complaints about noise.
